Resonant Counseling is the mental health training arm of Resonant Equity, Inc., which is a non-profit based in California. As a 501(c)(3) non-profit, we are categorized by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences as an exempt site, and are therefore able to work with mental health counseling programs to provide supervised practicum and internship placements to master’s students.
We are a fully virtual operation, both for supervision and training, and for counseling, which may not appeal to all trainees. For example, if you are interested in working with children, or are training to become an art therapist, our virtual-only training environment is not going to be a good fit.
However, operating virtually means that we have been able to design our training programs using stipends payable to our trainees, in order to encourage demographically underrepresented groups in the counseling profession and to improve recruitment and retention of counseling students and trainees in underserved regions or settings within California. We want to set a new standard within mental health counseling trainee to make stipends the norm, not the exception.
The statewide Health Workforce Data from the California Department of Health Care Access and Information identifies the following demographically underrepresented groups within the population of active Associate Professional Clinical Counselor and Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor behavioral health providers in California:
- Hispanic: 24% of counseling licensees compared to 40% of the California population
- Asian: 10% of counseling licensees compared to 15% of the California population
- All languages other than English are underrepresented among counseling licensees
HCAI data show that all California counties are predicted to experience shortages of behavioral health providers. The counties below have the largest predicted gaps in coverage, with the highest amount of unmet need. While we encourage applicants from any part of the state, Resonant Counseling is actively recruiting students who live in these California counties as part of our program to provide mental health services to underserved regions:
